In pointing out the shortcomings of the present education system, I believe Modern Parent has forgotten that schools and colleges are places where students are supposed to acquire academic knowledge and not job experience.
Based on my own experience, a combination of book and study and job exposure in school takes up too much time, is not cost effective and leaves students with doubtful competency in both areas. I witnessed there are parents who keep pushing their child to go for college and work at the same time to finance their own education. That’s exactly what I did years ago, work and study at the same time.
School is the place where you learn the theory. If you want to know how to do the job, go to work by taking up paid employment in your area of specialization.
An employer cannot be expected to pay for the mistakes an employee makes because the said employee is not ready for work The fact that companies employ graduates who command a relatively high salary but are not worth it, it costing these companies dearly by way of having to rectify the mistakes made by inexperienced employees and also loss of business.
Companies that want to be profitable in the future will need staff who are specialised, experienced, and highly adaptable.
Only employees who are willing to pay for their training out of their own pocket will be able to acquire these skills. The best way to solve the problem of unprepared students and dissatisfied teachers is to halt the provision of free education at secondary school level and make higher education available only to those who have an aptitude and desire to study, and are also able and willing to pay for their studies.
This course of action will produce workers who are specialists in their field and a true asset to their employers because they are both capable and have strong intrinsic motivation.
Making all students pay for their higher education will also greatly improve the quality of teaching, as the teachers will be challenged to maintain and upgrade standards by the demands of sincerely interested and enthusiastic students.

School is a place to study - not gain job experience
